Gorilla Trekking - Virunga Lodge

Spend 3 nights near the Virunga Volcanoes at Virunga Lodge.

The magnificent Virunga Safari Lodge, set on a stunning hillside near the Parc National des Volcans, has well established terraced gardens, with a magical sunken paradise garden as their focal point.

The Virunga Safari Lodge has been described as having ‘the best view in the world’ and as ‘one of the finest lodges in Africa’. The organic, ‘bush-chic’ design reflects the local building style and offers luxury comforts to all guests. Each banda has its own terrace with breath-taking views of the Virunga volcanoes or twin lakes, while sensitive installations such as low-flush toilets and solar power ensure you enjoy luxurious comforts while maintaining a crucial sensitivity to the environment.

The top of the world is a very civilised place with beautiful, landscaped grounds almost constantly enveloped in mist. The main lodge, with its bar, dining room and wide, wraparound verandahs, is built of stone like some fortified castle; from it there are commanding views of five of the national park's volcanoes, impertinent-looking peaks lined up in a grand procession. In the early morning, voices rise up from the hazy valleys below as villagers prepare to work their plots of land before the heat becomes too fierce. Up here on the top of the world, it is always cool and pleasant.

Day 1
Arrive at Kigali Airport. Met and taked to the Genocide Memorial before enjoying lunch in Kigali. The drive to the lodge follows tthe road as it climbs to the base of the majestic volcanoes. Check into the lodge and overnight.

Day 2
As the first light of dawn breaks through the curtain of mist clinging to the summits, we meet the park authorities and make our way into the Parc National des Volcans. Tracking the gorillas through the unique vegetation can take several hours of challenging walking, in wet and muddy conditions. To see a gorilla, the trek will have been worth the hardship.

Day 3
There is the option of adding on a second Gorilla Trek or one of the many optional add ons. These should be pre-booked.

Day 4
Return transfer to Kigali.

There are ten groups/families of habituated gorillas in Volcanoes National Park. Gorillas do not stay in the same spot hence the need to do some tracking before you spend your magical one hour with them. They usually climb higher up the mountain in the dry season, and descend in the wet season, so your tour guide might have a general idea of where the group you are tracking might be during a particular season, but there are no guarantees that you will find them where you expect them to be.

  • 10 Stone guest bandas with tile roofs (2 deluxe, 4 doubles and 4 twins) reflect the local building style.
  • En-suite bathrooms with flushing toilet, double vanity, shower with hot and cold running water.
  • Rooms have mosquito nets, 240v lighting and a private veranda.
  • Clients wishing to go gorilla trekking must be reasonably fit and able to handle walking for some time in the hilly and forested terrain.
  • If you have a cold, flu, or any other contagious infection, you should not go gorilla trekking.
  • Only one group of tourists can visit the mountain gorillas each day and you can only spend an hour with them.
  • You should keep a distance of 7m from the gorillas, and if the gorillas try to get close, try to move further away.
  • Try not to make sudden movements ehil ein the presence of the gorillas and keep your voices low, so as to maintain a relaxed atmosphere for the gorillas.
  • Do not eat or drink when you are with the gorillas
