The coastal belt, with endless beaches and indigenous forests, is separated from the interior by a dramatic range of mountains. The western interior is monopolised by the Karoo desert, which stretches to the Namibia border. Grasslands and savannah stretch eastwards to the Kruger National Park, which runs the length of the border with Mozambique and north to the borders with Botswana and Zimbabwe.
Weather - There is no time when South Africa needs to be avoided. The Cape coastal belt receives its rain during winter, from April through to August. The interior is a summer rainfall area, with afternoon thundershowers being common during December to March. Game viewing is at its easiest during the dry hot months of October to December. Whales can be seen in the Cape waters during the latter half of the year and the floral kingdom is at its best during August, September and October.
